Crossing the California-Oregon Border on the PCT: Emotional Moments & Trail Magic! (2026)

The Oregon Trail: A Journey's End and a New Beginning

As the sun rose, the camp was alive with anticipation. After a grueling 3.5 months, the hikers were nearing the end of their California leg, and the excitement was palpable. Dew-covered tents, a result of a unique cloud inversion, added an ethereal touch to the morning's atmosphere.

The Final Stretch

NorCal, with its last-minute challenges, was about to be left behind. Drom and I, eager to reach our destination, booked an Airbnb for ourselves and a few fellow hikers. Ashland, Oregon, awaited us.

Crossing the Border

Posh, Drom, and I had a special plan to cross the California-Oregon border together. We met at Donemore Cabin, a mere half-mile from the border, and savored the moment. The trail log and welcoming signs in Oregon brought tears to my eyes, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another.

Trail Magic and Warm Welcomes

What a delightful surprise awaited us! A kind couple, living the van life with their adorable dogs, offered us trail magic—burgers, cold drinks, ice cream, and even WiFi to connect with loved ones. It was a heartwarming welcome to Oregon, a state known for its hospitality.

The Final Push

Drom and I had a shorter day ahead, while some of our hiking companions chose to push on into the night. We were content with our pace, knowing we'd reach Ashland and enjoy our well-deserved zero day soon. California was behind us, and a new adventure awaited in Oregon.

Reflections

The Oregon Trail, a legendary hiking route, holds a special place in the hearts of many. It's a journey of endurance, camaraderie, and discovery. Personally, I think the trail magic and the warmth of the hiking community make these experiences truly memorable. It's not just about reaching the destination; it's about the people you meet and the connections you forge along the way.

What many people don't realize is that these trails are more than just physical challenges. They offer a unique perspective on life, teaching resilience, appreciation for nature, and the value of human connection. If you take a step back and think about it, these trails become metaphors for life itself—a journey filled with ups and downs, but always leading to growth and self-discovery.

As I reflect on this journey, I can't help but feel a sense of pride and gratitude. The Oregon Trail has taught me so much, and I'm excited to see what adventures Oregon has in store for us.
